The short explanation of this alert was:

Currently Arizona's budget woes are at the top of the legislative agenda, and tough decisions have to be made in order to balance the budget, but some of us are asking: at what cost?

There is a discussion at the legislature about cutting child care subsidies.  This cut would slash child care subsidies by capping participation or reducing eligibility rates from 165% to 145% of the federal poverty level.  This move would leave thousands of families without child care.

At a time when grocery costs and fuel costs are skyrocketing, it makes little sense to block working families from receiving child care subsidies.  In fact, stripping child care subsidies means thousands of working parents will have to cut work hours, quit jobs, or leave their children alone.

Balancing the budget on the backs of working families is a bad idea - get the conversation started today by drafting a letter to the editor and following the three easy steps below.

HERE IS A SAMPLE LETTER YOU CAN USE, BUT WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO PERSONALIZE IT.

Moms and working families rely on child care subsidies to help pay for the cost of child care so they can keep working.  Because of budget shortfalls, child care subsidies are under threat to be cut and thousands of families could be thrown into crisis.

At a time when more and more families are struggling because of rising transportation, housing and food costs, it doesn’t make sense to cut child care subsidies or create waiting lists. Arizona’s low-income families cannot pay for child care on their own. The Legislature and Governor must protect child care subsidies as a vital support for Arizona families.
