GreenCart Legislation Passes New York City CouncilThrough coalition building and outreach CCC mobilized individual New Yorkers and united local organizations to voice their support for GreenCart legislation. Individual New Yorkers sent a total of 1,550 e-letters to Consumer Affairs Committee Members and more than 100 social service, anti-hunger, community development, health, child advocacy and faith based organizations signed on to a letter of support delivered to the entire New York City Council. This constituent pressure was a major factor involved in tipping the scales in favor of GreenCarts. The bill was passed out of Committee on February 27th by a narrow 3 to 2 vote.
Following the Consumer Affairs Committee hearing, the GreenCart legislation passed the full City Council with a vote of 37 to 9. The local law will create 1,000 permits for GreenCarts and will bring fresh affordable produce to the neighborhoods most in need. GreenCarts are an essential step to improving access to and consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables and will go a long way to fight the illnesses of obesity, diabetes and heart disease.
