Amy Biehl, a graduate of Santa Fe High School, went to South Africa in 1993 at the age of twenty-six as a Fulbright Scholar to help that country's leaders develop a new constitution. While conducting voter registration for South Africa's first all-race election that ended the policies of apartheid, she lost her life. The Amy Biehl Youth Spirit Award was created by New Mexico Voices for Children to honor Amy Biehl and to acknowledge other New Mexico youth who have made outstanding contributions in the public interest. All nominees will receive recognition and a certificate. A Selection Committee of youth, adults, and community leaders will designate three honorees and a winner who will each receive a $1,000 scholarship and award sculpture.
